At an early age, I became interested in psychology and matters of the mind. I was also blessed with a natural gift of being able to listen to people and provide a safe and trusting space for them to open up. Due to these innate qualities and my interest in counseling, I decided that this is what I want to do with my life. Prior to pursuing that dream, I worked for a family business (dental surgery office) for almost 20 years. That role taught me how to work with patients, understand their point of view, offer quality customer service, and even deal with trauma and fears. I eventually decided to pursue my original dream of becoming a therapist. My journey began by earning a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy through Capella University.
I believe that counseling is a joint effort that involves both the training of the counselor and the client’s work with commitment. I feel that the therapy process is client driven through your own voice and experiences. This will be a collaborative effort to ensure that your goals are met, and healthy resilient personal functioning is achieved. As a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), I take a systemic view on issues, which means I believe that every individual is part of a larger relational system made up of friends, family, coworkers and more. It is within this system that an individual is influenced, while at the same time, the individual is also influencing the system. Additionally, each individual has a unique relationship with every other individual within that system, and it is those relationships that help form the way people feel about themselves and the behaviors they exhibit.
I specialize in working with couples and families but also provide services to individuals. I have worked with couples, families, and individuals on various topics ranging from substance use, infidelity, bereavement, divorce, behavioral problems and more. There is no one definition of what makes up a couple or what makes up a family, so I am open to seeing whatever you personally define as a relationship or family. My counseling style is warm and inviting as I am looking to build rapport and join your relationship system. I serve as someone to listen and help you reach your individual and/or relationship goals.
I work with families, individuals, and couples to help facilitate change that you as the client(s) agree is(are) going to be most useful. I integrate a variety of approaches to therapy as one size does not fit all. I often utilize Narrative Therapy, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and Solution Focused approaches to inform my work with people and maintain a baseline philosophy that draws heavily from Family Systems training. My approach is to meet clients where they are in their growth process as they explore their challenges, fears and goals in an accepting and confidential environment. Together we will create a treatment plan, set goals, and explore tools to assist with positive growth, living authentically and attaining a healthy well-being. While we look at the here and now, we will explore past experiences and relationships along with a focus on attachment and family dynamics.
