At a very early age, I became interested in psychology and matters of the mind. I was also blessed with a natural gift of being able to listen to people and provide a safe and trusting space for them to open up. Due to these innate qualities and my interest in counseling, I decided that this is what I want to do with my life. I worked for a family business (dental surgery office) for almost 20 years which taught me a lot about how to handle patients, understanding their point of view, customer service and even dealing with trauma and fears. Once the dentist started slowing down for retirement and myself having two young children, I decided it was time to pursue my original dream of becoming a therapist. It was then that I stated my journey towards my Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy through Capella University.
I believe that counseling is a joint effort that involves both the training of the counselor and work with commitment on the part of the client(s). I feel that the therapy process is client driven through your own voice and experiences. This will be a collaborative effort to ensure that your goals are met, and healthy resilient personal functioning is achieved. As an MFT, I take a systemic view on issues which means I believe that every individual is part of a larger relational system made up of friends, family, coworkers and more. It is within this system that an individual is influenced while at the same time, the individual is also influencing the system. Additionally, each individual has a unique relationship with every other individual within that system and it is these relationships that help form the way people feel about themselves and the behaviors they exhibit.
I specialize in working with couples and families but can provide services to individuals. I have worked with couples, families and individuals on various topics, ranging from substance abuse, infidelity, bereavement, divorce, behavioral problems and more. There is no one definition of what makes up a couple or what makes up a family so I am open to seeing whatever you personally define as a relationship or family. My counseling style is warm and inviting as I am looking to build rapport and join your relationship system. I serve as someone to listen and help you reach your individual and/or relationship goals.
I work with families, individuals and couples to help facilitate change that they agree is going to be most useful. I integrate a variety of approaches to therapy as one size does not fit all. I do utilize often Solution Focused and Narrative Therapy approaches to inform my work with people and maintain a baseline philosophy that draws heavily from Family Systems training. My approach is to meet clients where they are at in their growth process as they explore their challenges, fears and goals in an accepting, confidential environment. Together we will create a treatment plan, set goals and explore tools to assist with positive growth, living authentically and attaining a healthy well-being. While we look at the here and now, we will explore past experiences and relationships along with a focus on attachment and family dynamics.
